Siren Song is a horror film influenced by the Gothic Hammer Horror style of the 60’s & 70’s, with elements touching on the original haunted house horror of ‘The Old Dark House’ (1932), the impending doom of ‘Suspiria’ (1977), the location of the hotel and supernatural in ‘The Shinning’ (1980), the character relationships in ‘The Craft’ (1996) and the cannibalism of ‘The Wrong Turn’ (2003).
It focuses on Dan, a meat-phobic, lovelorn food writer with a tragic past, and Ryan, an ambitious, single-minded chef with a dark secret. The story begins with Dan pursuing a relationship with Callie, a mysterious woman he has been dating on-line.
Problems occur when guests at their isolated hotel begin to disappear and the guys discover the true source of the meat served to them by Callie and her monstrous sisters. Now Dan and Ryan must escape from the island if they want to survive beyond dawn.
The mythic monsters in this film – the sirens – have been reinterpreted for the 21st century with their luring songs, sung though the internet. Horror-going audiences will respond to fear of the unknown and the dangers posed by hidden truths; untrustworthy sources (both people and food), the consequences of secrets left to fester, and the potential for darkness in every human soul every human soul.
